Anthropic is preparing to give prospective institutional investors a closer look at its financial performance as the artificial intelligence company moves toward a potential initial public offering (IPO) that could become the largest in history.

CNBC reported Tuesday that the Claude maker plans to disclose its third-quarter financial updates to institutional investors.

The move comes as scrutiny of AI companies’ revenue growth and profitability intensifies, with investors increasingly questioning whether their valuations are justified by their financial performance.

Bloomberg had earlier reported that Anthropic was planning to host an investor day on October 14 in San Francisco, where the company is headquartered.

$2 trillion listing for Anthropic?

Anthropic could be targeting a valuation of around $2 trillion in a potential stock market debut, CNBC reported.

Bloomberg has also put the company’s potential valuation in a range of $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion.

Such a listing would surpass SpaceX’s $1.77 trillion debut valuation in July, making Anthropic’s potential IPO one of the biggest ever.

The company’s latest reported revenue figures are expected to exceed $100 billion by the end of this year, according to people cited in the CNBC report.

Anthropic confidentially filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this year but has yet to make its S-1 registration statement and detailed financial disclosures public. The company has not revealed an exact date for its IPO.

The upcoming financial update could offer investors a clearer picture of its growth as they assess how much the company might be worth in a public listing.

OpenAI revenue questions spooked market

The planned disclosure comes after uncertainty surrounding OpenAI’s reported revenue figures unsettled Wall Street last week.

OpenAI’s reported annualized revenue was found to be around $50 billion, roughly $20 billion below a previously reported figure of $70 billion.

The discrepancy prompted investors to reassess growth expectations across the AI sector.

The difference largely centres on how revenue generated through cloud-computing partners is accounted for.

OpenAI’s reported figure excluded the partners’ share of certain sales, making its revenue look smaller than expected.

The issue has raised questions about how AI firms report their sales and how investors should evaluate their underlying growth.

AI labs face questions over profitability

Investors are increasingly assessing whether the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure can generate returns sufficient to justify its enormous cost.

Billions of dollars are flowing into data centres, advanced chips and computing infrastructure as companies race to meet anticipated demand for AI services.

However, questions remain about whether the investments will deliver the financial returns needed to sustain spending at the current pace.

Rising borrowing costs add to the challenge, potentially making it more expensive for AI companies to finance further expansion.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and Broadcom CEO Hock Tan have both warned that capital availability and financing costs could become major constraints on the AI boom.

The executives have also highlighted the need for companies to demonstrate adequate returns on their investments over the longer term.

Anthropic’s planned financial update comes at a time when investors are seeking more transparency about the economics of the AI industry.

The potential $2 trillion valuation places significant attention on Anthropic’s financial disclosures.

Investors will be looking to understand how its revenue is developing and whether its growth can support the valuation being discussed ahead of a public listing.
